wrasse は17世紀にコーンウォール語 wrach から入った魚名で、ケルト系語にさかのぼる。語源義は「老女・魔女」とされ、厚い唇やしわっぽい見た目の連想から魚名になったと考えられる。関連語は Welsh gwrach、Cornish gwragh。
