The name Yoruba is generally traced through Hausa usage, including forms such as Yariba or Yaribawa. It was initially applied from outside to people associated particularly with the Oyo region and kingdom. During the nineteenth century, written, administrative, and missionary usage broadened the term into a collective name for related peoples and their language. Yoruboid is a later linguistic classification term formed from Yoruba with the suffix -oid.
