ヘブライ語の人名 Yehudah（ユダ）に由来。ヤコブの四男ユダの子孫を指す部族名から民族全体の呼称に拡大した。ギリシャ語 Ioudaios、ラテン語 Judaeus を経て古フランス語 juif から英語 Jew＋形容詞接尾辞 -ish に。
Jewish ultimately comes from the Hebrew name Yehudah, or Judah. It first referred to the tribe descended from Judah, then later to the wider people. The form passed through Greek Ioudaios and Latin Judaeus into English, where Jew took the adjective ending -ish.
