Academical means related to education, study, or serious scholarly work. It is similar to academic, but academic is much more common in modern English. This word is usually seen in formal or older-style writing.

academy（学校・学会）と academic（学術の）を知っていれば、その仲間だと押さえると覚えやすい語です。中心は academ- で「学問・学校の世界」に結びつく形。実際には academic のほうがずっと一般的なので、academical は「academic とほぼ同じ意味だが、やや硬い・古風寄りの形」とセットで覚えると混乱しません。an academic subject, academic research などの定番表現と並べて、「勉強・研究の文脈で使う形容詞」として記憶すると残りやすいです。
Notice the family: `academy`, `academic`, `academical`. The root `academ-` points to study, schools, and research. `Academical` is close to `academic`, but `academic` is far more common, so remember `academical` as the rarer, more formal relative.

academical はギリシャ語 akademeia を経て生まれた academy に、形容詞語尾 -al が付いた語です。academ- は「学問の場」を示し、academic や academy と同根なので、「学問の場に属する」から「学術的な」へ意味が伸びました。
"Academical" comes from "academy" plus the adjective ending "-al." "Academy" goes back through Latin to Greek "Akademeia," the name of the place linked with Plato's school. From meaning something connected with a place of study, it developed into the wider sense of being scholarly or related to learning; compare "academic" and "academy."
