acoustics はギリシャ語 akoustikos「聞くことに関する」が語源で、さらに akouein「聞く」にさかのぼります。acoust- は「聞こえ」、-ics は「学問・技術」を表し、「音をどう聞くかを扱う学問」から「音響」の意味になりました。関連語に acoustic, hyperacusis があります。
Acoustics comes through forms based on Greek akoustikos, meaning “concerned with hearing,” from akouein, “to hear.” The element acoust- therefore carries the idea of hearing or sound, while the English ending -ics commonly marks a field of knowledge or practice. The term first developed as the name of the science of sound and later also came to denote the way sound behaves and is heard within a particular space.
