アクチュエータ
解説 Definition
actuator は、電気信号や圧力などを受けて機械を実際に動かす装置、アクチュエータという意味です。actuate(作動させる)に関係する名詞で、ロボット、車、工業機械などの部品として使われます。
A device that receives a control signal or source of energy and converts it into physical movement. Actuators are used to operate parts such as valves, robotic arms, doors, and mechanical controls.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
actuate「作動させる」に「〜する物」を表す -or が付いた名詞で、「信号を実際の動きに変える装置」と分解して覚える。an actuator opens a valve や moves a robot arm のように、制御信号を受けるだけの sensor と違い、バルブや腕を物理的に動かす側の部品を指す。
Break actuator into actuate, “to cause a machine or mechanism to operate,” plus -or, meaning a thing that performs an action. An actuator turns a command or energy source into actual movement: it may open a valve, move a robot arm, or adjust a control surface. Contrast it with a sensor, which detects or measures conditions. The sensor supplies information, while the actuator acts physically. This input-to-motion pattern is the most useful way to remember the technical noun.
例文
The actuator opens and closes the valve.
そのアクチュエータがバルブを開閉します。
A small actuator moves the robot's arm smoothly.
小さなアクチュエータがロボットの腕を滑らかに動かします。
The engineer replaced the actuator because it no longer responded to the control signal.
制御信号に反応しなくなったため、技術者はアクチュエータを交換しました。

actuator の語源・成り立ち Etymology
actuator はラテン語 agere「駆り立てる・動かす」に由来し、actus「行為・動き」→ actuate「作動させる」を経てできた語です。actuate に「するもの・行うもの」を表す -or が付いた形なので、「動きを起こす装置」と考えると意味がつかめます。関連語は act, action です。
Actuator was formed from the verb actuate and the agent or instrument suffix -or, so it literally denotes something that causes action or movement. Actuate comes through Medieval Latin actuare from Latin actus, “an act or movement,” which derives from agere, “to do, drive, or set in motion.” The same historical family includes act and action. Its modern technical sense refers specifically to a mechanism that produces physical motion.
