extractor は extract＋-or「するもの」。extract はラテン語 extrahere 由来で、ex-「外へ」＋trahere「引く」から、原義は「中から引っぱり出す」。attract や tractor も同じ語根の仲間で、成分を引き抜く器具だと見える語です。
Extractor comes from extract plus the agent ending -or, meaning "thing or person that does." Extract comes from Latin extrahere, from ex- "out" and trahere "to pull." The core idea was "pull out from within," and extractor became the name for a tool or device that does that action. It shares its root with attract and tractor.
