An extensor is a muscle that straightens or opens a body part, especially a joint or limb. The word is used in anatomy, medicine, and sports science. It is the opposite of a flexor, which bends a body part.

extensor は extend「伸ばす」が見えれば入りやすい語です。解剖では flexor「屈筋」と対で出ることが多いので、まず「曲げるのが flexor、伸ばすのが extensor」とセットで固定すると強いです。-or は actor などと同じく「〜するもの」。つまり「伸ばす働きをするもの」→伸筋。extension「伸展」、extensor tendon などの形でも現れやすいので、筋肉・腱・関節を伸ばす場面と一緒に覚えると定着します。

extensor はラテン語 extendere「外へ伸ばす」に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ tendere「張る」+ -or「するもの」から成ります。直訳すると「伸ばすもの」で、体の一部を曲げた状態からまっすぐにする筋肉、つまり伸筋を指す語になりました。関連語は extend, tension。
