syndicalismはフランス語syndicalismeを経て、後期ギリシャ語syndikos「共同で弁護する人」にさかのぼります。syn-「共に」+ dike「正義・訴訟」で、「一緒に権利を守る人々」という核が労働組合主義の意味を支えます。syndicateやsyndicも同根です。
Syndicalism came into English through French syndicalisme. It goes back to late Greek syndikos, meaning someone who acts or speaks for a group, from syn- "together" and dike "justice" or "legal case." The sense developed from representing shared rights to the political idea of worker organization; syndicate and syndic come from the same root.
