ラテン語 ad-（～へ）+ directiare（導く）が古フランス語 adrecier を経て英語に。direct（直接の）と同根で、「正しい方向へ向ける」が原義。手紙の宛先を書く→特定の場所を指し示す、という意味の流れで「アドレス指定」に至った。
Cheat is a shortened form of Middle English escheat, a word for property that fell back to a lord or the state. That word came through Old French from Latin excadere, meaning "to fall out." Because fraud was often connected with such property cases, the word shifted from that legal setting to the general idea of trickery or dishonest action.
