データやメッセージがどの経路を通るかを決める作業を指します。そうした経路の組み合わせや選択肢そのものも「ルーティング」と呼ばれます。ネットワーク機器がトラフィックに応じて最適な経路を選ぶという動きも含まれます。

routing は route に -ing が付いた語で、route は古フランス語 rute、ラテン語 rupta via「切り開かれた道」にさかのぼります。rupture や interrupt と同じ rupt 系だと知ると、「道を割って作る」感覚から経路指定の意味へ伸びた流れが見えます。
Routing comes from route with the ending -ing. Route came through Old French from Latin rupta via, literally "a broken-open road," from a root meaning "break." The original idea was a path cut through land, and later it developed into the modern sense of choosing or directing a path. It is related to rupture and interrupt.
