advocating の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 advocare(ad-「~へ」+ vocare「呼ぶ」)が語源で、「助けを呼ぶ→弁護する」が原義。法廷で誰かのために声を上げる意味から「擁護する」へ発展した。関連語: vocation(天職)、provoke(挑発する)。
Advocating is the -ing form of advocate. Advocate ultimately comes from Latin advocare, formed from ad-, “to” or “toward,” and vocare, “to call.” An advocatus was a person called upon to provide help, especially legal assistance. From the image of someone summoned to speak on another person’s behalf, the verb developed its broader modern sense of publicly supporting or recommending a cause, policy, or group.
