先住民チョクトー族の言葉 alba ama（植物を刈る者たち）に由来するとされる。この地域の先住民アラバマ族の名前から州名となった。別説では alba ayamule（茂みを切り開く者）とも。先住民の農耕文化を反映した地名である。
Alabama takes its name from the Alabama people, whose name was recorded in several early spellings by European colonists. The tribal name entered English through Indigenous languages of the southeastern United States, probably via Choctaw. Proposed analyses connect elements of the name with clearing or gathering vegetation, but the exact original formation remains debated. The Indigenous group’s name was eventually applied to the territory, river, and U.S. state.
