「amiss」は中英語 on miss「的を外して」が縮まった語で、a- は on、miss は「外す」。miss や mistake も同じ“外れる”発想を引き継ぎ、物事が amiss だと“どこか標的からずれている”感じになる。
Amiss comes from Middle English on miss, later shortened, with a- from on and miss from the idea of failing to hit a target. The older image was of something going off the mark. From that, the word came to suggest that something is not quite right or has gone wrong in some way. Related words include miss and mistake.
