責任や義務を十分に果たしていない、注意を払うべきことを怠っている状態を表す形容詞。単に怠けるというより、職務上の不注意や配慮不足、言及すべきことをしない落ち度があるという硬めの表現で使われる。

remiss はラテン語 remissus に由来し、re-「後ろへ」+ mittere「送る」から成ります。力や緊張を「ゆるめてしまう」イメージが、そこから「だらしない」「怠慢な」という意味へ変化しました。remit や mission も同じ mittere の仲間です。
