godmother は古英語 god「神」と modor「母」の複合語で、洗礼で子を支える“神の前の母役”が原義。血縁の母ではなく霊的な後見人を指すのでこの意味になり、godfather や motherhood と並べると役割の輪郭が見えやすい。
