解説 Definition
善悪の基準や道徳的な判断そのものを持たない、またはそれを考慮しない状態を表します。悪いと分かっていて道徳に反する immoral とは異なり、そもそも道徳の枠組み自体が欠けているというニュアンスを含む語です。
Amoral means not having a sense of right and wrong, or not caring about moral rules. It describes a person, attitude, or action that is outside normal ideas of morality. It is different from immoral, which means clearly against moral rules.

moral が「道徳的な」なので、まず amoral は a- でその土台が抜けた形と押さえると覚えやすいです。ポイントは immoral との違いで、immoral は「善悪は分かったうえで道徳に反する」のに対し、amoral は「そもそも善悪の物差しで見ていない」。人だけでなく system, behavior などにも使われ、「冷たく悪い」というより「道徳判断の外にある」という感覚で整理すると定着します。
Start from `moral`, then notice the `a-` removes that base idea. `Amoral` is useful to remember by contrast with `immoral`: `immoral` goes against morality, but `amoral` stands outside it. Think of a person, system, or behavior that does not use a moral scale at all.

amoral は否定の接頭辞 a-「〜がない」＋ moral から成り、moral はラテン語 moralis、さらに mos/mores「習慣・行い」に由来します。morality と同根で、文字通りは「道徳の基準を持たない」。そこから「非道徳的な」と理解できます。
Amoral combines the prefix a-, meaning "without," with moral. Moral comes from Latin moralis, based on mos or mores, meaning custom, habit, or conduct. So the original sense is "without moral standards." It later developed into the idea of being outside or lacking concern for morality. A related word is morality.
