アナフィラキシー
解説 Definition
anaphylactic は、「アナフィラキシーの」「アナフィラキシーによる」という意味の形容詞です。日本語の「アナフィラキシー」は名詞として使われますが、英語の anaphylactic は anaphylactic shock や anaphylactic reaction のように名詞を修飾します。
Relating to, caused by, or characteristic of anaphylaxis, a rapid and potentially life-threatening systemic allergic reaction. The adjective commonly modifies nouns such as reaction, shock, or emergency.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
名詞 anaphylaxis に形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた「アナフィラキシーの」。日本語では「アナフィラキシー」と名詞で言いがちだが、英語では an anaphylactic reaction、anaphylactic shock、anaphylactic emergency のように後ろの名詞を修飾する。単なる allergic より、急速で重篤な全身反応を示す語として覚える。
Link anaphylactic directly to the noun anaphylaxis and notice the adjectival ending -ic. English therefore says “an anaphylactic reaction” or “anaphylactic shock,” while anaphylaxis itself names the medical condition. Picture a clinic responding immediately to a severe reaction after exposure to peanuts: the emergency is anaphylactic because it involves anaphylaxis. This word is more specific and urgent than allergic. An allergic reaction may be mild or localized, but an anaphylactic reaction is rapid, systemic, and potentially life-threatening, so immediate treatment is central to the typical context.
例文
She had an anaphylactic reaction to peanuts.
彼女はピーナッツでアナフィラキシー反応を起こしました。
Anaphylactic shock requires immediate medical treatment.
アナフィラキシーショックには直ちに医療処置が必要です。
The clinic keeps medicine ready for anaphylactic emergencies.
その診療所はアナフィラキシーの緊急時に備えて薬を用意しています。

anaphylactic の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 ana-(逆・再び)+ phylaxis(防御)から成る。phylaxis は phylassein(守る)に由来。関連語: prophylactic(予防の)、phylactery(護符)。本来「防御の逆」つまり免疫が逆に体を攻撃してしまう過剰反応を意味し、アレルギーの最も重篤な形態を表す。
Anaphylactic is formed from anaphylaxis plus the adjective-forming suffix -ic. Anaphylaxis was coined from Greek ana-, here conveying reversal or opposition, and phýlaxis, “protection” or “guarding,” from phylássein, “to guard.” The formation originally suggested the opposite of protection when exposure produced a dangerous reaction instead of immunity. Modern medical use applies anaphylactic to reactions, shock, and emergencies caused by the severe systemic allergic response called anaphylaxis.
