解説 Definition
『and so on』は、例を並べたあとに『など』の意味で続けるときに使う定番表現です。リストが長くなるときや、同じカテゴリの思いつくものをざっと示すときに便利です。カジュアルな口語でも書き言葉でも使えます。
Used after a few examples to show that there are more similar things in the same group. It is common in speech and writing when you do not want to give a full list.

「A, B, C, and so on.」の形で丸ごと覚えるのが近道です。and は「そして」、so on は「そのまま先へ続く」と感じると、列挙を打ち切って「など」とまとめる表現だとつかみやすいです。似た働きの etc. より会話で自然に聞こえやすく、同じ種類のものを並べたあとに置くのが基本。例として「books, pens, notebooks, and so on」のように、聞き手が残りを推測できる場面で使います。出来事が次に起こる意味の and then とは別物です。
Remember the whole listing pattern: `A, B, C, and so on.` The words `so on` give the feeling of continuing further, so the list could go on. It is close to `etc.`, but `and so on` often feels more natural in speech.

andは古英語ond（そして）、soは古英語swā（そのように）、onはゲルマン祖語由来。「そのように続けて」が原義で、列挙の省略を示す慣用表現。関連語：and so forth、et cetera（ラテン語で同義）。列挙を「そのまま続く」と示す便利な表現。
Each part is very old: "and" comes from Old English "and," "so" from Old English "swa," and "on" from an old Germanic word. The phrase originally had the sense of "and in that way continuing." That is why "and so on" is used when a list could keep going further.
