apartheid の語源・成り立ち Etymology
アフリカーンス語 apartheid「隔離・分離」に由来し、apart「離れて」と接尾辞 -heid「〜である状態」から成ります。直訳すると「離された状態」で、人種隔離政策の核心が語の形にそのまま表れています。関連語に apart、parting があります。
Apartheid was borrowed from Afrikaans, in which apart means “separate” and the suffix -heid forms abstract nouns meaning a state or condition. Its literal structure therefore expresses “separateness” or “the state of being apart.” The word became internationally known as the name of South Africa’s legally enforced system of racial classification, segregation, and discrimination. Afrikaans -heid is related in function and history to English -hood and German -heit.
