appealing は appeal + -ing。appeal は古フランス語 apeler、さらにラテン語 appellare にさかのぼり、ad-「…へ」+ pellere「押す」が核で、「心へ呼びかける」感覚から「魅力的な」という意味に広がった。関連語は appellation, appellate。
