ラテン語 appendere「ぶら下げる」にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」+ pendere「掛ける・つるす」から成ります。古フランス語を経て英語に入り、「後ろにぶら下げて付け足す」感覚から「追加する」になりました。関連語は depend, pendant。
Append goes back to Latin appendere, meaning "to hang onto," from ad- "to" and pendere "to hang." It came into English through French and Latin forms. The sense changed from physically hanging something on to adding something at the end; depend and pendant share the same root.
