既存のデータやファイルの上に新しい内容を書き込んで置き換えること。
To overwrite means to replace old data or text with new data or text by writing over it. It is mainly used in computing, recording, and file editing, and it often suggests that the original version may be lost.

overwrite は over「上から・越えて」+ write「書く」からなる語で、write は古英語 writan「刻む・書く」に由来する。rewrite や writ と同根で、先にある文字の上へさらに書き込むイメージから「上書きする」の意味がそのまま生まれた。
