古フランス語 replacer から。re-（再び）+ placer（置く）で「元の位置に再び置く→取り替える」が原義。placerはラテン語 platea（広場）に由来し、「場所に配置する」意。関連語：displace（追い出す）、placement（配置）も同じ語根を持つ。
Replace comes from Old French replacer, built from re- "again" and placer "to place." At first it meant to put something back in its place. From that sense, it later came to mean putting one thing in the place of another, that is, substituting it.
