古フランス語 replacer から。re-（再び）+ placer（置く）で「元の位置に再び置く→取り替える」が原義。placerはラテン語 platea（広場）に由来し、「場所に配置する」意。関連語：displace（追い出す）、placement（配置）も同じ語根を持つ。
