すでに印刷された切手、紙幣、文書などの上に、別の文字・数字・図柄をあとから刷り重ねること、またはその追加された印字自体を指す。額面変更、記念表示、注意書きの追加などを行う際に使われる印刷上の処理。
An overprint is an additional printing of a book, document, or other material after the first set of copies has already been made. It is usually done when more copies are needed.

overprint は英語 over-「上に・重ねて」と print から成り、print は古フランス語を経てラテン語 premere「押す」にさかのぼる。imprint や pressure も同根で、文字通り「上からもう一度押して刷る」と考えると上刷りの意味が見える。
Overprint combines over "on top of" and print. Print comes through French from Latin premere, meaning "to press," and this root is also seen in words like imprint and pressure.
