覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
vocation が「天職・本業」、occupation が「職業」だと知っていると位置づけがつかみやすい語。avocation はその外側にある、自分を強く引きつける活動で、趣味・余技に近い。単なる暇つぶしより少しまじめで、長く続ける個人的関心を指しやすい。photography is my avocation のように、「仕事ではないが自分らしさが出る活動」を思い浮かべると、hobby とのニュアンス差ごと覚えやすい。
Start with `vocation`, which is your main calling or career. `Avocation` is the activity beside that, not your main job but still something you care about seriously. Think: your work is your vocation, and photography or music can be your avocation.

avocation の語源・成り立ち Etymology
avocation はラテン語 avocare「呼び離す」に由来し、a-「離れて」+vocare「呼ぶ」に分けられます。本業から人を呼び離すものという発想で、転じて「副業」「余技」、さらに今の「趣味」の意味へ落ち着きました。関連語に vocation, vocal。
Avocation comes from Latin avocare, meaning "to call away," from ab- "away" and vocare "to call." It is related to vocation and vocal, which share the same Latin root. The word first referred to something that called a person away from their main work, and later came to mean a secondary activity or hobby.
