avocation はラテン語 avocare「呼び離す」に由来し、a-「離れて」＋vocare「呼ぶ」に分けられます。本業から人を呼び離すものという発想で、転じて「副業」「余技」、さらに今の「趣味」の意味へ落ち着きました。関連語に vocation, vocal。
Avocation comes from Latin avocare, meaning "to call away," from ab- "away" and vocare "to call." It is related to vocation and vocal, which share the same Latin root.
