contestation の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「contestation」は contest + -ation で、contest はラテン語 contestari「証人を立てて訴える」に由来します。con-「共に」+ testis「証人」から成り、争いを『証言を出すこと』として捉えた語です。testify や testimony は同根です。
Contestation comes from contest plus the noun ending -ation. Contest goes back to Latin contestari, which originally meant to call witnesses together, from con- meaning together and testis meaning witness.
