ラテン語 ad satis（十分に）から古フランス語 asez を経て、英語の asset に。元は「債務を返済するのに十分な財産」を意味した。関連語: satisfy（満足させる）、satiate（飽きさせる）。「十分な量」が「財産・資産」へと意味が変化した。
Assets comes from asset, which entered English through Old French from a Latin phrase meaning "enough" or "sufficient." At first, it referred to property that was enough to pay a debt.
