assignation はフランス語 assignation、ラテン語 assignare にさかのぼり、ad-「…へ」+ signare「印を付ける」に分けられます。sign や signal と同根で、もとは日時や場所の指定だったため、そこから「落ち合う約束」ひいては密会へ意味が寄りました。
Assignation came into English from French, and goes back to Latin assignare, from ad- meaning "to" and signare meaning "mark" or "designate." It is related to sign and signal. At first it meant a formal appointment or arrangement, and later it narrowed to mean a secret meeting, especially a romantic one.
