アストロラーベとは、中世イスラム文明で発展した天文観測機器のこと。星や太陽の位置から時間や方位を測定するために使用された。
An astrolabe is an old scientific instrument used to measure the position of stars and planets. It was important in astronomy and navigation before modern tools were invented.

astro- が見えたら astronomy, astronaut と同じく「星・天体」系だとまず連想する。astrolabe は telescope のように遠くを拡大して観察する道具ではなく、星や太陽の位置を手がかりに time や direction を割り出す古い測定器具。compass が方位、clock が時刻を単独で示すのに対し、astrolabe は天体の位置からそれらを読むイメージ。航海・天文・中世イスラム文明の文脈とセットで覚えると定着しやすい。
