ateはeatの過去形で、古英語etan、さらにゲルマン祖語*etan、印欧祖語*ed-（食べる）にさかのぼります。つまり別語ではなく、『食べる』の核がそのまま過去形に残った形です。eatやedibleと同じ根だとわかると、『食べた』の意味が自然につながります。
