attitude に形容詞語尾 -inal が付いた語で、attitude はイタリア語 attitudine を経て後期ラテン語 aptitudo（適合・姿勢）にさかのぼります。語根は aptus「合った」で、aptitude や adapt と同系です。もとは『身の構え』で、そこから『心の構えに関する』つまり『態度的な』になりました。
