Disbarment is the official removal of a lawyer's right to practice law. It usually happens because of serious professional wrongdoing or breaking legal ethics rules.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
dis- は『外す』、bar は bar exam や be admitted to the bar の bar と結び付けると覚えやすい。つまり『法曹界の bar から外されること』で、-ment が付くので動作ではなく処分・結果の名詞。disbar は『弁護士資格を剥奪する』、disbarment はその処分そのもの。bar を『棒』『酒場』と取らないのがコツ。法律記事では face disbarment, attorney disbarment などの形で出やすく、suspension（一時停止）より重い処分として覚えると定着しやすい。
Think of `bar` in the legal sense, as in `the bar` or `bar exam`, not a drinking place. `Dis-` gives the idea of removal, and `-ment` makes it the result or penalty. So `disbarment` is being removed from the legal profession, and it sounds more serious than a temporary `suspension`.

disbarment は dis-「外す」＋bar「法廷の仕切り・法曹界」＋-ment から成る語です。bar は古フランス語 barre にさかのぼり、related barrister, barrier。文字どおり『法廷の柵の外に出すこと』で、弁護士資格剥奪の意味が腑に落ちます。
Disbarment comes from dis- "remove" plus bar and the noun ending -ment. Bar comes from Old French barre and originally meant a physical barrier or rail; in law it came to mean the barrier in a courtroom and then the legal profession itself. So the word originally suggested putting someone outside the bar. Related words include barrister and barrier.
