revocation はラテン語 revocatio に由来し、re-「後ろへ・戻して」＋ vocare「呼ぶ」＋ -tion「こと」。もとの感覚は「呼び戻す」で、与えた許可や権利を取り消して元に戻すことから「失効・撤回」になった。関連語は revoke、invoke。
Revocation comes from Latin revocatio, from revocare, meaning "to call back," with re- "back" and vocare "to call." The original idea was bringing something back after it had been given or sent out. From that, the word came to mean the formal canceling or withdrawal of a right, order, or permission; revoke and invoke share the same vocare root.
