英国などで法廷で訴訟を扱うことに特化した弁護士。依頼人を代理して裁判で主張を展開し、証拠や法律をもとに判決に影響を与えることを目指す。裁判所とのやりとりや訴訟戦略の立案も担う。
A barrister is a type of lawyer, especially in the legal system of the UK and some other countries. Barristers mainly give legal advice and speak in higher courts. This word is not usually used for lawyers in every country, so the system matters.

Remember it as the courtroom lawyer in British English. A `barrister` is easy to keep separate if you pair it with `court`, `trial`, and spoken argument. The contrast with `solicitor` helps: one prepares and advises, the other speaks in court.

barrister は法廷の bar「仕切り棒・法廷の柵」に立つ人を表す語で、英語 bar に人を表す語尾が付いてできました。bar は古フランス語 barre にさかのぼり、barrier や barricade と同根なので、「柵の内側で弁論する人」から「弁護士」です。
Barrister was formed in English from bar, the railing in a courtroom, plus an ending for a person. Bar came from Old French barre, meaning a barrier or rod. The word originally meant a person allowed to speak inside the bar, and from that it became the name for a lawyer.
