Bar entered English through Old French barre, meaning a rod, beam, or barrier, and is related to Late Latin barra. A barrier separating areas in a courtroom gave rise to legal uses of the word. The physical counter separating customers from the drink-serving area was likewise called a bar, and the term eventually came to denote the drinking establishment itself. Barrier and barricade are historically related words.
