aurora は「オーロラ」という意味で、夜空に現れる自然の光の現象を指します。日本語のカタカナ語とほぼ同じ意味ですが、英語では aurora borealis（北極光）や aurora australis（南極光）のようにも使います。
An aurora is a natural display of shifting colored light in the night sky, seen mainly at high northern or southern latitudes. It is produced when charged particles interact with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Aurora comes from Latin aurora, meaning “dawn,” and was also the name of the Roman goddess of dawn. The Latin word is connected with an ancient Indo-European root associated with shining and daybreak, also reflected in words related to the east. The name was later applied to the luminous polar phenomenon because its colored glow recalled light at dawn. Borealis means northern, while australis means southern in the established scientific names.
