purple は古英語 purpul を経て、ラテン語 purpura、さらにギリシャ語 porphyra「紫の染料・その貝」に由来します。中心の purp-/porphyr- は染料名そのもので、porphyry や porphyrin も同根と知ると、色名が染料から生まれたことが腑に落ちます。
