bailee は法律用語で、他人から動産などの占有を一時的に預かり、一定の目的のために保管・運搬・管理する人を指す。倉庫業者や修理業者のように、預かった物を相当の注意をもって扱い、条件に従って返還する義務を負う。
A bailee is a person or company that temporarily receives and takes care of someone else's property. This word is mainly used in legal or business situations. A bailee has responsibility for the item but does not own it.

まず -ee を見たら「行為を受ける側」を思い出すと覚えやすいです。employee が employ される人、trainee が train される人なのと同じで、bailee は bail（物を預ける）された側、つまり「預かった人」。法律では bailor（預ける側）と対で出るのでセットで整理すると定着します。使う場面は repair shop, warehouse, carrier など、一時的に他人の物を預かって後で返す状況です。単なる owner ではなく、預かって管理責任を負う人、という感覚を持つとぶれません。

bailee は英語 bail「預ける・引き渡す」に、受け手を表す接尾辞 -ee が付いた語で、「預けられた側」が核です。bail は古フランス語 baillier、さらにラテン語 baiulare「運ぶ・担う」へさかのぼり、bailment や bailiff も同根。
Bailee was formed in English from bail plus the suffix -ee, which marks the person who receives an action. Bail came through Old French baillier from Latin baiulare, meaning "to carry" or "to bear." The idea changed from handing something over to naming the person something is handed to; bailment and bailiff are related words.
