belfry は中英語を経て古フランス語 berfrei にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン系の「守りの塔・見張り塔」を表す語に由来する。近縁語にドイツ語 Bergfried があり、後に bell と結び付けて理解されたため、「見張り塔」から「鐘楼」へ意味が寄った。
Belfry came into English through Old French berfrei and probably goes back to a Germanic word for a tower of defense or observation. It is related to German Bergfried. Later speakers connected it with bell, and the meaning shifted from a defensive tower to a bell tower.
