ruble はロシア語 rubl' に由来し、さらに rubit'「切る・刻む」にさかのぼるとされます。同根のロシア語 rubka にも通じ、銀の延べ棒を切り分けた単位が貨幣名になったと考えると、「ルーブル」がもとは「切り分けた一片」だった感覚が見えてきます。
Ruble comes from Russian rubl', and it is usually linked to a verb meaning "to cut" or "chop." The idea is that pieces cut from a silver bar became units of value. So the name of the currency may originally have meant something like a cut piece.
