ドイツ語 Taler（ターラー）に由来。16世紀ボヘミアの Joachimstal（ヨアヒムスタール）渓谷で鋳造された銀貨 Joachimsthaler の短縮形。tal は「谷」の意味で、英語の dale（谷）と同根。銀貨の名が通貨単位として世界に広まり、現在の「ドル」というお金の単位につながった。
Dollar comes through Dutch and Low German forms related to German Taler. Taler was shortened from Joachimsthaler, the name of a silver coin minted from metal associated with Joachimsthal in Bohemia during the sixteenth century. The place-name element Thal, now spelled Tal in German, means “valley” and is related to English dale. The coin name later spread and became a general name for currency units.
