解説 Definition
二本の脚で立ったり歩いたりする動物を指す名詞。人間や多くの鳥のように、移動の際に二本の後ろ脚を使う生き物について用いられ、四足動物と対比して体のつくりや歩き方を説明するときによく使われる。
A biped is a person or animal that walks on two legs. It is used in biology and general description to compare two-legged animals with four-legged ones. Humans are bipeds.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず bi- を見たら bicycle, bilingual と同じく「2」を連想する習慣をつけると覚えやすいです。後半の -ped は pedal や pedestrian に出る「足」の仲間。つまり biped は「2本の足をもつもの」。動物分類では quadruped（四足動物）と対で出やすいので、biped vs. quadruped のセットで覚えると定着します。人間・鳥・恐竜の説明で seen as a biped のように現れやすい語です。
Use the prefix `bi-` as your first clue: it means two, like in `bicycle` or `bilingual`. The `-ped` part is related to feet, as in `pedal` or `pedestrian`. So `biped` is easy to store as a two-footed or two-legged creature, especially if you pair it with `quadruped`.

biped はラテン語 bipes に由来し、bi-「二」+ ped- / pes「足」に分けられます。だから意味は文字どおり「二本足のもの」で、pedal や pedestrian も同じ ped- を持つ仲間です。形が見えれば、biped が「二足歩行の生き物」だとすぐ読めます。
