解説 Definition

A boomerang is a curved throwing tool, some forms of which are designed to return toward the thrower. Figuratively, it can also mean an action, accusation, or plan that returns to harm the person who initiated it.

Memory Tip

throw a boomerang、a boomerang comes back が典型表現です。

Picture someone throwing a curved wooden tool and watching it circle back. The common patterns throw a boomerang and the boomerang came back make its physical meaning easy to remember. Then extend that return movement to the figurative use: a harsh comment, accusation, or plan can become a boomerang when it damages its originator instead of its intended target. Unlike a general backlash, a boomerang strongly suggests that something sent outward returns against the person who launched it.

例文

He threw the boomerang across the field.

Etymology

English borrowed boomerang in the early nineteenth century from an Aboriginal Australian language of the Sydney region, commonly identified as Dharug. It originally named an Indigenous Australian throwing implement. The word is not usefully divisible into English roots or affixes. Its figurative sense developed from the familiar image of a returning boomerang: an action directed at someone else may come back and produce an unwanted result for its originator.
