Etymology
The archaeological site takes its modern name from the Cahokia, an Illinois Confederation people living in the broader region when French settlers arrived. The ancient city’s inhabitants did not leave a recorded name for it and were not necessarily the historical Cahokia people. A proposed interpretation connects the tribal name with an Illinois-language expression concerning wild geese, but that explanation should be treated cautiously rather than as certain.
