carrack の語源・成り立ち Etymology
carrack は古フランス語 caraque、スペイン語 carraca を経た船名で、起源はアラビア語 qaraqir「商船」説が有力です。細かく切るより、交易船の名が各地へ広がった語と見るとわかりやすいです。もし carricare 系とみれば、charge や cargo も近縁です。
Carrack came into English through Old French and Spanish ship names like French caraque and Spanish carraca. It is widely thought to go back to Arabic qaraqir, meaning trading ships. The word spread as the name of a large merchant vessel used in long-distance trade, rather than as a word built from smaller English parts.
