16世紀スペインの冒険小説に登場する伝説の楽園の島「Califia女王の国」に由来するとされる。スペイン人探検家が未知の半島をこの名で呼んだ。Califiaはアラビア語のcaliph（カリフ＝後継者）と関連する可能性がある。
The name California was applied by Spanish explorers and is generally connected with a fictional island in a popular early-sixteenth-century Spanish romance. That island was ruled by Queen Calafia and was imagined as a rich, remote realm. The deeper origin of the fictional name is uncertain; proposed connections with caliph and related Arabic forms remain hypotheses rather than established facts. The geographical name later spread beyond the peninsula to the present region.
