capsize は18世紀英語の語で、語源は未詳ですがスペイン語 chapuzar「頭から沈める」との関連がよく指摘されます。cap や size に分ける語ではなく、capsized や capsizing と同じく『船がひっくり返る』動き全体を一語で表すと考えると腑に落ちます。
Capsize appeared in English in the 18th century, but its exact origin is uncertain. It may be related to Spanish chapuzar, meaning to plunge headfirst into water. Even though it looks like cap plus size, it was not built that way; the whole word came to express the idea of overturning into the water.
