Carrel comes through Medieval Latin and Old French from a word meaning a small enclosed space or compartment. It first referred to a little study booth used by monks for writing or reading manuscripts. Later, the meaning shifted to the small partitioned desks or study spaces found in libraries today. The word carol may come from the same wider source by a different historical path.
