覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
cataloging は動詞 catalog「目録を作る」に -ing を付けた動名詞・現在分詞で、米式ではこの綴り、英式では cataloguing も使います。語末の g は /ɡ/ のままです。cataloging books や cataloging a collection の形で、資料を分類し、検索できるよう記録する一連の作業を思い浮かべましょう。
Connect cataloging directly with the verb catalog: add -ing to describe the activity in progress or the activity as a noun. In American English, cataloging is the usual spelling; British English also uses cataloguing. The final g in catalog remains a hard /ɡ/. Picture a librarian recording each book’s title, author, and subject, or a museum worker documenting every new object. Common combinations such as cataloging books, cataloging a collection, and careful cataloging reinforce the idea of organizing information so that items can later be found.

cataloging の語源・成り立ち Etymology
catalog はフランス語 catalogue、ラテン語 catalogus を経て、ギリシャ語 katalogos「順に書いた一覧」にさかのぼります。kata-「下へ、順に」+ logos「語・記録」から成り、cataloging は情報を並べて記録することで、同系語に dialogue, monologue があります。
Cataloging is formed from catalog plus -ing. Catalog entered English through French catalogue and Late Latin catalogus, from Greek katalogos, meaning a list or register. The Greek form is associated with kata, conveying an ordering or item-by-item sense, and legein, “to say” or “to gather.” The modern English form preserves the central idea of recording items systematically in a list.
